Level 42

There is something about her because she elevates me to Level 42. * Today she was game on!

What’s better than a fiery Kristen? Give up? A very happy Kristen Gagne that’s who. I love when she has an edge on and is near intolerant of any inconsistencies.    But there are times like today that I just love being in her class because she’s totally entertraining. Like when she belts out a very serious phrase and is quick to laugh as if she didn’t hear herself the first time saying it. She had me smiling every minute because she can laugh at herself, that’s so cool.

Every once in awhile she will give out an individual specific lesson and today I was the recipient of that specificity as only she can give. I have become in a sense complacent about how hard I am working and I am not compensating for the fact that I have improved markedly in the past 15 months, and what was challenging for me before is now done with relative ease. And when she said: “That’s too slow” after a surge I was brought back to reality. God I love her for that. Any time she is critical you know it’s you she’s thinking about. She demands excellence and I am sure as all of us are, that’s one reason why we come back every day.

I did love that girly girl thing she did today about how  some riders are about not wanting to sweat too much,  are here to burn only a modicum of calories and then  being on their way. I for the life of me can’t conceive that anyone is like that in this class.  Kristen if we are in this class we are here because we want to kick our collective Asses and it’s your magic wand that is getting us into the shape of our lives. Maybe you see something this rider doesn’t from your vantage point but before long those riders will drop out of sight.

And there is something about Saturday night.

P.S.
I thought I was done with this but it came up again today. From my bike #3 I can see the rider under the clock. Now there are many of us who love this man but he was skylarking, chatting, putting a towel on his head during class and sitting in the saddle when he was told specifically by the Evil Woman to get in position 3. But no he just did as he pleased. This just can’t go on. ☺

Transitions

Last night some of us took a spin class in advance of the 90-minute charity ride that is occurring at the Vanderbilt Planetarium on Thursday May 5th.  The sponsoring entity is Image Cycling run by a man named John Hinrichsen who is a Life coach, mountain guide, indoor spin instructor for 16+ years, ultra-marathoner and former hockey player. I could go on but you get the idea.

The setting of the Planetarium would have any instructor equipped with all the tools to make a ride even more exciting, but I suspect John would not need the theatrics of surround sound or compelling images of a beautiful rain forest or a revolving starscape on a dark night. He would be most at home even in the Lavender Palace playing the top 10 from Billboard. As it was the music was eclectic but motivating and when we ended our ride to Ravel’s “Bolero” I was intrigued to find out that it had lyrics.

Someone asked me familiar with the Planetarium just how did they get bikes in there? Simple enough although the seating is permanent there was plenty of room on the periphery of the theater and a void in front of the image control console for about 26 bikes. We had about 17 riders and the number 26 is the number we are hoping will attend next weeks charity event to fill the house.

The bikes not being Schwinn’s took some getting used to but once the questions of how would this work out were answered we all slipped into our normal ‘gear’ and rode what I and others thought was a not only compelling ride but a unique one as well. John talked about the new millennium and his take was that he felt that more advancements were ahead for us in not in the way of technology but they would come in the most compassionate way of cooperation instead of competition. Being a student of Humanistic Psychology this continuum of thought made so much sense. He made a great point about how we are so obsessed with the latest equipment, the newest fad of exercise technique and even HR monitors. He concluded and I concurred that these things are just not working.

Titling this entry was easy, as I will call it “Transitions.” Transitions was a phenomenal under theme to his ride because as John moved in and out of the saddle (and this struck Debbie particularly) his movement was almost imperceptible. His grace and strength were magnificent to behold and ultimately one we could try to emulate as we advance along our own timelines.  I did not have to mirror his positions each time because I could set my own transitions like in the saddle by surging and pulling back as opposed to getting in and out. It gave a less structured element to the ride that was refreshing.

For those of you that are taking the ride next week, we can tell you beforehand you are in for a great experiential 90 minutes and for those of us present this past Thursday night, we will all have something to add to our daily experiences with our favorites back home in Equinox.

P.S.
I think there are a few open bikes for May 5 and if you can check this experience out, I highly recommend it.

Imagery vs. Technique

Once in a great while I get intuitive hits while I ride and today was one of those days. As Kristen painted her beach run in Mexico I was transported to my own runs in the sands of Long Beach training for the Boston and New York Marathons.  The only thing missing for me today was the olfactory sensation of the salt air.

In the first 15 months of spinning I have finally come to the expectation that I pay attention to my form keeping my upper body ‘quiet’ and letting my legs do virtually all the work. This takes concentration, dedication and a conscious effort because it is so easy ‘bounce’ up and down or shift my upper body from side to side. These movements add nothing to my performance and probably subject me to an increasing chance of injury. And one thing that spin has done for me is that it has kept me virtually injury free and I want to keep it that way.

This week had me in Michelle’s class on Monday night and Tripp’s class on Tuesday and the former was classic in it’s technique and the latter was like the best amusement park ride ever conceived of on a stationary bike. Today however, the Evil Woman merged those two rides for me. We all know that her instruction and attention to form is unparalleled and she usually uses the imagery of other riders ahead of us to move alongside and pass but today she chose the imagery of her recent Mexico trip and she talked about running in wet sand with the ocean on her right and some buoys off in the distance as markers to shoot for. Whenever she elects to this type of imagery it makes me viscerally attached to former experiences that are indelibly etched in the memory of my soul. Running on the sand in Long Beach was one of those pastels that will never leave me. There are races too in Central Park and on the streets of Boston that have similar deep attachment to me. So when she waxed on with her guided imagery, my effort and I guess energy levels got lifted just a little higher with the benefit of emotion rather than conscious effort. I hope you’re following me here because it was in that instant I realized that my athleticism is emotionally based rather than in my musculature.  It says to me that I can pay attention to form all I like and I will continue to do so but it is in my imagination that unleashes the adrenalin rushes that fill my bodily cavity.

By the way as much as I love the “breakaway” I am now so in love with the “surge” as well because the word is much more emotional to me and since I am a sentient being at heart and so attached to words in general this new ingredient makes spin even spicier.

P.S.
Over on Tripp’s Blog I have posted a members experience on her triathlon in her own words. I posted some pictures as well. I have never had a guest blogger but Constance has a picturesque story so give a look @ http://trippdoherty.blogspot.com/

The Empress

Extemporaneous is the only way to go with Corso because the challenge is sometimes too great to contemplate. What I mean is that for me and this is just my take your experience might be totally different Michelle is a study in concentration. Monday night I listened intently to every single utterance from her and for a change she was off the bike giving us a conductor’s rendition of her choreography. She is usually atop her bike pedaling at a furious pace that makes her legs appear as if they are in retrograde as I have written about before. Monday night however had her using her hands and arms as batons and her physiology was doing a fandango I have never seen before.

I was determined to fulfill each of her commands to the fullest and not back off even a ¼ of a turn because she is my spin barometer. I take her class intermittently and when I do I instantly know at rides end how I am progressing in terms of my fitness levels. And on Monday night for the first time, I made it through to the end without flailing although if it were but a minute longer I would have hit the wall and probably had reverse peristalsis. But by the time I did finish, I had nothing left and as the Empress started the cool down I had to just sit atop my Schwinn and catch my breath because I could barely lift my arms. Truly Michelle Corso is a Wonder Woman and Lynda Carter has nothing on this woman’s incredible physiology. (She has an unbelievable body).

The Five-Minute Rule

I got shut out today from The Blue Sapphire this Easter morning and my session ended up Napoleon Solo on a lone bike outside Studio 1, where I was joined coincidentally by Michele and Kocaj. I guess I just didn’t have enough impetus to make the class on time this morning because I was up at dawn but I lollygagged and young Liz had absconded my bike. No sour grapes I didn’t move my ass.  Rules are rules but they have to be carried out consistently and that’s not done all the time.

As I listened to Michele I pedaled to a moderate resistance, and she  made a convincing argument that I needed to try either Fire or VIPR or TRX. Spin is just fabulous but if done correctly it’s only a lower body exercise and since taking up spin in earnest in February of last year I have all but abandoned my weight workout routine. Maybe just maybe I have finally heard the call and will try Maureen who I hear is fantastic at TRX or Kocaj with EQ: 360 or Fire as its known in its shortened version. I was looking at that piece of equipment and Michele said it was as if the Bosu and the trampoline had given birth and the result was the EQ 360. It would seem like it is more stable than the Bosu but not as elastic as the trampoline. I am just speculating about what it is all about, but I am definitely going to give it a try.

I see that Telly’s class is booked for the 8:30 and so I think its time for CSI or the Corso zone on Monday morning.

Spin Notes: I see that young Dana has made her recovery and is back to running and spinning. I also would like to point out that two relatively new members Rose and Margaret are helping sponsor a charity cycle ride on the 5th of May at the Vanderbilt Planetarium at 7 PM.  Sounds like a theme ride in an unusual place and I will report back to you on that experience.

Hell & Heaven

Friday

Maybe it was just me but I got the feeling Friday that either Evil Woman was letting us off the hook because it was her first day back from Mexico or my spinning capabilities had improved markedly in the last week. I do know that I am improving but I also have to believe that Kristen was just going easy on us as she seemed to have this laissez-faire attitude rather than a Rihanna approach of chains and whips. That’s what I saw from #3 anyway.

It’s good to have the now bronze beauty back and leading her flock and as spring hits full stride the summer is next up in a flash so we better crank that red dial to the right because the Queen of Spin is always alluding to stripping down to our near nethers into skimpy bathing attire. We can see that she is ready now it’s our turn. Although there are plenty of our spin mates that have nothing to shed like the Prom Queen for instance.  But if some of us are to look good in the altogether time is running out of the hourglass for Dorothy.   I see that shrinking man in the mirror but I still have a long way to go before I shed the T-shirt like I could do easily at 45.

But no matter if we do get to our bathing suits or not in the summer of ’11, our fitness is climbing a ladder of success every session in the Lavender Palace.

Saturday

I said to Kristen how much difference a day makes. And I write this piece as a two-part episode of KSC because two rides could not have been more different than they were from Friday and Saturday. And at the outset know it’s all-good. The major difference today was she was as Don said: “back in the groove”. Even in vacation mode she’s good but there was no comparison from what she got out of us today as compared to yesterday.

Have you noticed that there appears to be as Evil Woman puts it: New Blood in the room? It’s unmistakable because the energy has more amperage but that’s just my take. I love when new people arrive because it adds a vitality that is just indescribable like Almond Joy. What do you think? It’s always great to have new members and every time I see one in the locker room I introduce myself just to lend my support to help them feel at home here which is as I have described via Louis: The Third Space.

Kristen also gave me an insight in the sense of how she models each ride based on the 100 plus eyes she is looking out on. There are some that need a different type of coaching from class to class. That is so deep to think that she pivots from day to day adjusting her choreography based on who is in the room and more specific which day it is.

Harder, deeper, faster, slower. It's what a ride is supposed to be when it's real good.

In Absentia

Disappointed is what I was when I discovered there was no 1215 spin with Svengali today because of the holiday schedule. My friend Robin was more than a little chagrined because she was really looking forward to it. I might have just more experience doing it Napoleon Solo as I have sometimes reported. However my friend Jesse happened to be in house and we spun together and the time passed almost as quickly even though our resident stars were in absentia.

No music? No problem the conversation was spirited and because I have a natural affinity towards this devout family and successful businessman my pleasure was double mint good.  It is people like Jesse and my friend Debbie Jensen that make time at Equinox often the best parts of my day.  No Tripp? No Kristen? They have their lives too and will be back in the saddle “faster than you can say Jack Robinson”* I didn’t have to dance alone today and it was as the new age phrase goes: It was all good.

*Jack Robinson: This expression originated in the 1700s, but the identity of Jack Robinson has been lost. Grose's Classical Dictionary (1785) said he was a man who paid such brief visits to acquaintances that there was scarcely time to announce his arrival before he had departed (Dictionary.com, n.d.).

Roses Are Red

I haven’t heard that that piece of doggerel in quite some time. It has its origins back to 1590 with Sir Edmund Spenser and his epic The Faerie Queene. I came to this title today because one of the twins of Margaret and Rose appeared in Young Atlas’s class today. I will get to the young redhead in just a bit.

It has been a dog’s age since I have scribed about our young Damian and he replacing Michelle Corso who was replacing Kristen in the Main Studio was principally the reason why but he was awesome nonetheless.  I would love to cover more instructors but I only have one pair of legs and as I discovered last week too many sessions leaves me virtually on fumes.

I absolutely loved the choreography today as it included some visceral favorites of mine. Damian loves the re-mix route and that’s cool as long as I can make out the backbeat like when he played: You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon. He had a great showing despite the fact that it is a double holiday this week with Passover and Easter. You have to like this kid Vella he has an intensity about him and a plan each time I have had the good fortune to saddle up.

Now about Ms. Rose O’Connor, my redheaded young friend. She approached me about a cause she is emotionally attached to. It’s at the Vanderbilt Museum (that’s close by isn’t it?) on Thursday evening May 5 from 7 to 830 PM, Image Cycling is sponsoring the 10th Anniversary of Aids Lifecycle.  As soon as I can solicit my engineer friend to place the image and details, you will have it forthwith.  Until then see you in spin.

And Now For Something Completely Different Part II

It’s been brought to my attention that I am addicted to spin and being an alcoholic it would make sense to check in with that possibility. However, 21 and ½ years plus without a drink makes it crystal clear when any activity gets just a bit out of hand.  Not that I am an expert mind you but when I woke up Saturday I had no gas for the pedal stroke and after doing two doubles during the week it was just not in the cards.  Fast forward to this morning and I felt reticent again even though The Blue Sapphire, Carolyn Mellace is awfully hard to resist.  And so I decided that I would relegate my exercise today to my new mountain bike and prepare for the Corso Zone  (CSI) Monday morning.

However, my friend Debbie Jensen had a different suggestion. That was to take a Yoga class here in the next town that was perfect for me the neophyte and didn’t hold back the experts like she and the other classmates I found there. I knew that my core strength would serve me well but the sourdough pretzel, which is my body, might find me in pieces and not a pretty sight on my rubber mat.

Lo and behold I didn’t break and I learned the extended triangle pose or Trikonasana and with a little help, Chandrasana, which made me, feel that I could get to like this. My friend Jesse has helped me with some basics including breathing but this was the first time in several years that I decided to take a class without too much thought else I might have passed on the opportunity.  I am convinced that for the longevity I seek in spin I must take at least one yoga or Pilates class every week.

I know I have waxed poetic about some of the friends I have made in KSC and one in particular I wanted to pour it on about, and that’s Debbie Jensen who I kid about being a Prom Queen (which she was). And even though her looks are a double take make no mistake this woman is a red ruby to have as a friend because she is authentic and never ever condescending and has an intuition that is nothing short of miraculous. Thank you DJ.

Very Bad Things

Put her in, she’s ready to play. I think right field has an opening for her. She is Amy Amato and my vote if my vote counts is two thumbs up! Way up! She took a tough Army like approach with no sugar coating and warned us against cell phones and that she would take them away from us if she found us scanning them during class. Some took umbrage to this but friends would we even think of pulling out our 4G’s with the Evil Woman at the helm? I think not! I suppose she could have gotten the message across differently to soothe our fragile egos but I for one liked that she took a stand.

Amy has a unique style and she doesn’t crowd our heads with too much verbiage but she gets the message across. A lot of spin instructors use the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion. This Scale has a range of 1 to 10. 1 being I am eating bon bons on the couch and 10, I am dead.  Its premise is that we measure our intensity by sensations our body feels rather than a number off a HR monitor.   Ms. Amato had us at one point ramped up to a 10 which I have never experienced and I cranked the resistance dial just one turn down from the maximum. I was able to keep a pedal stroke reasonably smooth without jacking my upper body into contortions and it got me thinking that I need to bring myself to the next level of fitness. I never fail to leave a Lake Minnewaska under my bike but maybe this is the time I need to polish the lens at just how hard I am working. One can get complacent even if we spin outside our comfort zone. Amy got me thinking.

There even was a Zen moment when she said that no goal is reached unless we can close our eyes and can see it. I know what my dream is and as I shut my peepers, I saw what dreams may come.

I had never heard the song: Bad Things by Jace Everett and it had a great sexy edge and Amy did some very bad things this morning and it felt good awful good.

And now for something completely different:

Who Loves Ya Baby?

Looks like him somewhat, no?

The first and only time I met Kojak I was running on the boardwalk in Long Beach in 1975. He was just standing there watching the sunset and I was training for the New York Marathon before it moved out of Central Park and as I slowed my pace to a crawl to tell him how much I loved watching him on TV, just like every other fool, he was so gracious and motioned his thanks.  And as I felt compelled to stop, his countenance softened even more and he told me he used to live here years ago and asked how was my running coming? It remains a fond memory that I will never forget. He was by himself an by the time I made my turn around on my return trip home there was a crowd of about 50 surrounding him and he looked as at home as he was when he was standing there alone.

Fast forward 36 years and I woke up this morning spinning with his reincarnation, John Kocaj. Maybe he spells it a little differently now to avoid publicity but the resemblance is uncanny. This time he is much more fit and leading us as a substitute instructor for the vacationing Kristen. Most of the faithful showed but there was more than a few that stayed in bed because teacher wasn’t there. However, they missed a man truly dedicated and I am sure he will find himself quite at home with the star-studded lineup that is Equinox Woodbury.

Kocaj or Kojak it still spells entertainment. John, we wish you the best of luck.

BRO=Back Row Only

Shaking off the lethargy of Monday morning is always a challenge for me, which is the main reason why I suit up for KSC at 8:30.  After 8 spin classes last week including two days off, I was ready to get back into #3 and spin off some of those Butter Fingers and Social Tea biscuits I had consumed rather liberally on Sunday. After Saturday’s class Kristen warned us not to eat back the calories we burned, but the bad boy  that I am, I did not listen and luxuriated in the empty calories of junk food. Shame on you Jack because John McQueen, always amped up for class is trying his best to shrink his frame.

Let’s talk about a much bigger problem that Kristen is facing and she is going to have to deal with it sooner or later before the class loses all it’s decorum. It’s the back row. Led by Don Berman and his partner in crime Harold, both of these men have infected the whole 5th column.  And let’s not leave off starting on the left side of this row of miscreants, Nancy Kaplan and to the far right Randi Meiselas.  Both women claim that they are not part of these disruptions but I know better because there is unbeknownst to them an informant in their midst. Don virtually confirming his guilt, ran up to me at the end of class claiming: “It’s not me, it’s not me”. Yeah Don me thinks thou protests too much. You’re not fooling anyone. I see you back there waving towels and not getting up to in 3 when Kristen tells us to. Okay this is the last word I am going to have on this subject because to belabor the point would seem overkill. Suffice it to say that our agent (and I won’t say who) will keep us up to date with accurate reports.

In the spirit of fair reporting, yours truly was admonished today as well. But it wasn’t by the Evil Woman.  It was Leslie who basically told me to shut my cakehole because I was way too loud in one of my exhortations. I will have to steer clear of Miss Crabtree lest I get a red mark on my report card.

The Germans Are Coming The Germans Are Coming!

A Saturday KSC and nothing like the day before in the 945 on Friday. That’s what makes her class so attractable. She is loquacious on Friday and cracking us up on Saturday.  The Evil Woman paints the ride by sometimes using imaginary cyclists ahead of us and gives picturesque descriptions of their attire or less than likeable traits they possess. Yesterday had me in stitches or as near to it as I could be in the middle of a breathless ride.

You may have seen that pitchman Vince for ShamWow on television, in fact it would be hard not to if you are in front of the boob tube for any length of time. If you’re not this guy is not only demonstrative but also boisterous and sports a behead hairdo. Anyway he starts out telling us that the Germans make the ShamWow and he says: “You know the Germans they always make good stuff”. Well that’s what I thought of when Kristen set her first vignette.

She starts out by telling us there’s a pack of riders ahead and they have thick muscled bodies and they mustn’t be from around here because they don’t even speak English. They’re Germans and you know how good they are at cycling. I just was beaming the whole ride because well, she is just something else. She often quips that she hopes she doesn’t say anything she might regret but that never happens even if we are licking the lulu lemons off someone’s ass in front of us because it’s coming out of her mouth and we just love it. Cary Grant in The Philadelphia Story, 1940 if some of you might recall takes Katherine Hepburn’s face in hand and shoves her backwards as only he could get away with. I feel the same about Kristen she can say or do anything as far as I am concerned because she does it with flair no instructor can match.

What about having a sex tape out there? No there’s not much chance of that because that would make her much too infamous and she would have her own TV show.

Lamby Stories

Two Blue Sapphires in a row. Last Sunday and then this Thursday and I am ready for the funny farm. Not because of Carolyn but I am reeling just a bit from 3 spin classes with Svengali on Wednesday. I don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for me I just don’t think that I will do that again so that I can write a story entitled “Tripple Play”.

Carolyn Mellace what can be said about her that hasn’t already been said? I won’t mention her lithe form, her sparkling blue eyes or just how skilled she is when she leads a class because we all know this about her already. So what is it that I can say that hasn’t been said? Is it her genuine concern for students? No we know that. Is it the fact that she always gives us more for our money? No that’ true but no that’s not it. Is it because her choreography is never the same? Well that’s true too but that’s not the reason. I will get to it relax. And let’s skip her stunning physiology and beauteous countenance and we might as well lump in her seemingly unending athleticism too but I still haven’t got to it. Still want to know I just thought of what it is and I bet I just bet you will agree but didn’t think of this. You’ll have to ask me if you care but even if you don’t the reasons given are reason enough to spin with The Blue Sapphire, Carolyn Mellace on Thursday nights at 6 or Sundays at 1030.
P.S.
I never knew that lambs had belly buttons but I do now.

If you know someone that has addiction issues please give a look at my experiences:

Shari Lewis Never Had a Lamb Like This

It’s been several fortnights since I have had the distinct pleasure of spin class with The Blue Sapphire. I can attest that only scheduling kept me from her penetrating blue eyes and adroit call.  Carolyn is always Sunday entertrainment and it was great to be back in the Schwinn saddle with her at the microphone.

She might be lithesome and she might be nicknamed the Lambster by her brother siblings, but this woman is more like a miniature mountain lion than a docile barnyard creature. I absolutely loved her choreography today as it had the yin yang of what goes up must come down. The oscillation between the heavy roads of peanut butter without oil to the hot knife through butter of the flats gave today’s ride the excitement I have always found she lends to the proceedings in the Lavender Palace.

It’s been a great week in the CS between the Evil Woman, Tripper and now ending with The Blue Sapphire, Carolyn Mellace. I thank you all for extending me your considerate expertise, enthusiasm and devotion to the craft of spin.

Back Up the Tonka Truck

And what happens after that moment? We unload! That’s exactly what we did today in KSC. How many times have I said this: Today was the toughest class I have ever taken. I have lost count but it’s probably a hundred times. But I believe it to be true each and every time I say it, and today was no exception. The last 5 minutes I felt like I was going to fail and trip at the finish line. I was so out of gas.

However, I must make a huge confession. And some of my friends might call me out and send me on my way to my cardiologist. Remember two weeks ago when I said I was in atrial fibrillation just before I started class? And I cogitated that I could simply exercise right out of the rapid-fire heartbeat?  It worked then but….

Well today I had another episode and spinning did not bear out my layman’s theory as I stayed in my ‘event’ the whole ride. So back to square one on theory, which I will refrain from speaking about, until I get my PhD. Did I do myself a mischief? Or was it not a problem? I do have visions of God calling me home and me finding myself on a spin bike simply slumping forward. Not to worry though because Louis or Peter will simply come in and scrape me off #3 and within minutes you can all be back at it as if nothing happened.

Were you watching the Evil Woman today? This high-spirited athlete who is about to turn 39 had it all going on today.  Between back row admonishments and her Zen like positive affirmations and her sprinkled winks you can’t help but love her. She cares so much it has to hurt so good for all of us. It’s almost as if I have  come to the place that I luxuriate in the discomfort knowing how much good I am doing my aging but fit physiology.  Someone asked me if I was spinning with the Kristenettes today? I can’t think of another group that I feel so privileged to be a part of than my spin classmates with Kristen Gagne.

Back up the Tonka Truck! I never hold back my effort in these 60-minute intervals, because there is only one hour a day that I can be absolutely certain that a negative thought will not cross the theater of my mind, and that is the hour I am spinning in KSC.

KSC Saturday

We rock tomorrow at 9:15. Be there for the ride of your life.
