Never in the 3 year writing of this particular blog KSC have I ever written anything but positive verses about the goings on in the CS or as I affectionately call it the Lavender Palace. Although the back wall now seems white so I may have to change the studio’s nickname. As I was saying every time I write here it is about the pluses and never about what I think is not so good. And if I have ever been to a spin class I did not enjoy I simply didn’t write about it. Those days are gone and now I will call it as I see it, feel it and experience it.
This entry is about David Cooper a young man that I affectionately dubbed the Illustrated Man. (Rod Steiger played this role in 1969) I have taken his class now this makes it the third time and the prior two did not impress me enough to write about them. In the absence of Tripp Doherty vacationing on the left coast I thought why not see how far David has come over what the past year that he has mantled this position. So here goes.
What did impress me was that David had a plan and if you want a well-orchestrated workout David has mastered this part of his repertoire. His music albeit non descript fit perfectly in the dozen or more “roads” he planned quite adroitly. I like the fact that his discography was blended like a DJ, as there were no 4-second breaks between songs. I am still undecided however about whether that might be important or not. He is animated which I love in an instructor and he gave you the feeling that he really enjoys what he is doing.
Like it or not I am very vocal in just about every class I take and believe it or not I do not just bellow to hear myself it is only because I am fully associated in what I think is the finest athletic exercise regimen I have ever been involved in since my days as a long distance runner. About ten minutes in Coop after several of my vocal outbursts told me that in essence if I spent more time concentrated on my effort instead of exercising my vocal chords I might have a better workout. I took this to mean Jack shut up. Well let me tell you I ain’t ever gonna shut up. In fact the only one that I would keep my mouth closed for is Kristen James but otherwise keeping quiet is not on my menu.
I think I need to comment on his technique and keep in mind that I might be biased because I am used to the likes of Kristen, Dana and Tripper. If I had to characterize the ride I would say it was “saddle sore” just too much time seated and not enough in position 3. Now maybe that makes his ride different but I get numb when I am seated too long. That also could be that I don’t sit back enough in the saddle off my pubic bone. Be that as it may I didn’t like that. Otherwise he had a rhythm but it was far from being syncopated and I felt at times either behind the beat or ahead of it depending on your point of view. Overall his technique was above average. And as I have said he’s still a freshman at this so trying to grade him against those more experienced might be a tad unfair. I think too he might be just a bit ahead of himself in assuming he is a veteran.
What really got me chapped was David referring to us as “Woodbury”. We are not Woodbury leave that for Roslyn or Great Neck. There is no other club everybody else would love to be us but unfortunately they cannot hold our spin shoes. So being called Woodbury to me was an insult. And to be fair I am biased this being my 10-year anniversary as a member I joined this club when it was just a trailer taking sign ups.
Would I take David's class again? I guess my answer would be yes. I had a huge puddle underneath my bike and burned an unusually high caloric count of 571. He motivated me especially when he told me to shut up. Don’t take this personal Coop but I know you can take constructive criticism and I will be back soon and by the way my mouth will never be closed my friend. And David I never write almost 800 words about anyone so know that you pissed me off but it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
